El Senador John McCain y el Gobernador Mike Huckabee van camino de formar una sociedad de conveniencia en Iowa y New Hampshire. El objeto es neutralizar al enemigo común, Mitt Romney. El ex Gobernador de Massachusetts lo apostó todo desde el principio a una estrategia que contemplaba ganar en los primeros estados y provocar un efecto dominó que hiciera inevitable su nominación. El riesgo para Romney es que tan sencillo como lograr articular dicha estrategia con éxito, puede ser hacer aguas sin remedio en fechas muy tempranas.

McCain y Huckabee parecen competir en carreras diferentes, pero Romney compite en ambas. McCain necesita que Huckabee derrote a Romney en Iowa, para tener alguna opción de ganar New Hampshire. While Huckabee and McCain have repeatedly criticized Romney, they have showered each other with affection. McCain has lauded Huckabee as "a man of integrity, honesty, and decency." And Huckabee has praised McCain as "a true, honest-to-God American hero."

The warmth between them may be heartfelt, but both men recognize that they need each other over the next two weeks. McCain needs Huckabee to beat Romney in Iowa's Republican caucuses on Jan. 3, so that Romney is weakened for the New Hampshire primary five days later. And Huckabee needs McCain to draw votes from Romney in Iowa. Polls indicate McCain and Romney are in a statistical tie in New Hampshire, and Huckabee is leading Romney in Iowa. (...)
