Cambios en el equipo de Thompson

Tom Collamore, hasta ahora campaign manager de la "no campaña" de Fred Thompson, pasara a ser un simple asesor. Su lugar será ocupado por el estratega republicano de Florida, Randy Enright. Un hombre cercano al ex Gobernador Jeb Bush que ya participó en el equipo de Bush-Cheney. Se ha anunciado también que Spencer Abraham, ex Senador por Michigan y ex Secretario de Energía, será el presidente ejecutivo de la campaña y enlace con los círculos políticos de Washington DC.

Las malas lenguas aseguran que la sustitución de Collamore se ha debido a los fuertes desacuerdos de este con la mujer del candidato, Jeri Kehn Thompson. La señora Thompson es una antigua operativa del Partido Republicano y, según dicen, le gusta llevar la voz cantante en la campaña de su marido. Ella sería quien más está abogando por mantener la estrategia de no anunciar la candidatura hasta que la terna republicana quede reducida a unos pocos candidatos. Estrategia que para muchos ya ha dejado de ser efectiva.

(...) Republicans close to the campaign said Collamore, a senior official in the Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations, was fine at tasks like lining up offices, but was too technocratic and not sophisticated enough for show time.

The advisers said his announcement has been delayed to the latter part of August or early September so that he will be ready to roll out a top flight campaign and be prepared to answer questions from reporters and charges from opponents. He is spending a lot of time in policy briefings, friends say.

Several Republicans said Thompson needs to dive in sooner than that. “The momentum is slowed from the initial hype,” said one Republican sympathetic to Thompson.

"The luster is gone. It’s like the girlfriend who just isn’t fun anymore. It’s time for substance. People are ready to see him engage. He’s been in his own little universe.” (...)
