La cadena de televisión canadiense CTV destapó ayer que, en el último mes, la campaña de Barack Obama aseguró al Gobierno canadiense, a través de su embajador en EEUU, que la posición del candidato ante el NAFTA es pura retórica electoral, y que en ningún caso piensan reabrir el tratado de libre comercio para renegociarlo tal y como está prometiendo Obama a los electores. El episodio vuelve a generar dudas razonables sobre cuánto hay de verdad y cuánto de interpretación en el Senador por Illinois. Los portavoces del candidato se han limitado a declarar que "Barack Obama no hace promesas que no piensa mantener", sin llegar a negar con claridad la información.
